Why not run your own FTP server?
You could run your own FTP server on a laptop, but that is not trivial when it comes to network, firewall, and configuration. When network conditions change, you risk the setup failing in that critical moment.

Camera configuration tips
We prefer configuring a custom button to send a file via FTP. This way we can review shots on the camera screen, and do a quick culling and only send the better photos. If you want someone else to handle that job, most cameras can be configured to send all shots automatically at the cost of some extra battery usage. With "modern WiFi" most connections keep up with trigger-happy sports photographers if sending reasonably sized JPEGs.
